Peru combines high-altitude cities, Andean trekking, coastal travel and lowland Amazon regions, so the health plan changes sharply with the route. Cusco and Machu Picchu raise altitude questions; Amazon itineraries raise yellow fever, malaria and mosquito-borne disease questions.
A short organised tour is different from independent trekking, volunteering, family visits or extended travel through rural communities. Bring sleeping altitudes, trek dates and onward countries to the consultation.
Travellers visit Peru for Lima, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca, high mountain routes and Amazon lodges. Rapid ascent can cause altitude illness even in fit people, while remote treks increase the importance of injury planning and access to medical care.
Food and water exposure also varies between hotel-based tours and longer local stays. Animal contact, cycling and remote work may make rabies vaccination more relevant.
Hepatitis A and routine UK vaccines are commonly reviewed, with typhoid considered for longer or higher-exposure trips. Yellow fever vaccination may be recommended for some low-altitude eastern areas but is not usually needed for high-altitude itineraries limited to Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu.
Malaria risk is mainly in lower-altitude Amazon regions, not the high Andes. Dengue and other mosquito-borne infections can also occur. Altitude illness deserves a separate plan: gradual ascent, lighter activity at first and prompt descent if severe symptoms develop.
Book four to six weeks before travel and bring a detailed route with elevations. If you fly directly into Cusco or travel quickly to Lake Titicaca, discuss acclimatisation and whether altitude medication is appropriate for your medical history.
Pack repellent for lowland regions, safe food and water supplies, sun protection and reliable travel insurance that covers trekking altitude and evacuation. Fever after Amazon travel or serious altitude symptoms need urgent assessment.
