Your local travel clinic

Our rabies specialist clinic in Standish, Wigan, focuses on pre-exposure rabies vaccination for people whose travel or work puts them at higher risk. Rabies is present in many parts of Asia, Africa and Latin America, and being vaccinated before you go makes any treatment after a bite simpler and reduces the number of injections you would need. This is a distinct service from our general rabies vaccine page, written for travellers who want to understand the pre-exposure course in detail.

Usually recommended for Wigan
This clinic focuses on rabies pre-exposure vaccination, usually a three-dose course over around three to four weeks, with an accelerated schedule possible for some travellers. Rabies vaccine is prescription-only and every plan is tailored to you in your consultation. Every other major travel vaccine is also available on-site if you need it.
This is a guide, not a fixed package. Your pharmacist tailors it to you in consultation, and you only pay for the vaccines you actually need.

Who should consider rabies pre-exposure vaccination

Rabies pre-exposure vaccination is worth considering if you are backpacking or travelling for a long time in Asia, Africa or Latin America, working with animals as a vet, zoologist, conservation volunteer or farm worker, or heading somewhere remote where medical care and rabies treatment could be hours or days away. Cyclists, runners and motorbikers can be more exposed to stray dogs, and children are more likely to approach animals. Our pharmacist will help you weigh up your own risk during the consultation.

The pre-exposure course

The standard pre-exposure course is three doses of vaccine given over a period of around three to four weeks. For some travellers with less time before departure, an accelerated schedule may be an option, and our pharmacist will discuss whether that is suitable for you. Because rabies vaccine is a prescription-only medicine, the plan is always confirmed in your consultation rather than sold as a fixed package.

What pre-exposure vaccination does and does not do

Pre-exposure vaccination primes your immune system so that, if you are ever bitten or scratched, you need fewer follow-up injections and you do not require one of the harder-to-find blood products used in unvaccinated people. It is an important head start, especially in remote areas. It does not mean you are fully protected and it does not remove the need to act. If you are bitten or scratched by any mammal, you must wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water and seek medical care straight away, even if you have had the pre-exposure course.
