Yellow fever and your certificate

Yellow fever is a consideration for parts of South America, including areas of Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador. Some countries also ask for proof of yellow fever vaccination if you are arriving from a country with a risk of transmission, so your route matters. As a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre, we assess your need, give the vaccine where suitable and issue the international certificate (ICVP), which becomes valid ten days after vaccination.

Travel vaccines usually recommended for South America

Alongside yellow fever, most travellers are advised to be up to date with hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus. These reflect the food, water and everyday risks across the region. Because travel vaccines are prescription-only medicines, our pharmacist confirms your list in a consultation rather than selling a fixed package.

Vaccines considered for some trips

Depending on your route and activities, our pharmacist may also discuss hepatitis B and rabies. Rabies is worth considering for remote travel, jungle stays or contact with animals. Pre-exposure vaccination makes treatment after a bite simpler and reduces the number of injections needed, but it does not remove the need to clean the wound and seek medical care straight away if you are bitten or scratched.

Malaria and antimalarial tablets

Some lowland and Amazon areas of South America carry a malaria risk, while high-altitude cities and many tourist areas do not. Where appropriate, our pharmacist will discuss antimalarial tablets alongside bite-avoidance measures. We tailor this to your exact itinerary and the areas you will visit.

When to book

Book a few weeks ahead where you can, as the yellow fever certificate is valid only from ten days after vaccination and some vaccines need more than one dose. Same-week appointments are usually available at our Standish clinic, with no GP referral needed.
