Yellow fever and your ICVP certificate

Many safari destinations in sub-Saharan Africa either recommend yellow fever vaccination or require proof of it for entry, especially if you are arriving from or travelling through another country with a risk of yellow fever. Northwest Clinics is a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre, so we can assess your need, give the vaccine where suitable and issue the international certificate (ICVP). The certificate becomes valid ten days after vaccination, which is one of the main reasons to book ahead.

Travel vaccines usually recommended for a safari

Alongside yellow fever, most safari travellers are advised to be up to date with hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus. These reflect the food, water and everyday risks of the regions and the rural nature of many safari itineraries. Because travel vaccines are prescription-only medicines, our pharmacist confirms your list in a consultation rather than selling a set package.

Vaccines considered for some safari trips

Depending on your route, length of stay and activities, our pharmacist may also discuss hepatitis B, rabies, meningitis and cholera. Rabies is worth considering for remote travel and contact with animals. Pre-exposure rabies vaccination makes treatment after a bite simpler and reduces the number of injections needed, but it does not remove the need to clean the wound and seek medical care straight away if you are bitten or scratched.

Malaria and antimalarial tablets

Large parts of sub-Saharan Africa carry a malaria risk, and it is often higher than in other regions, so this is an important part of safari planning. Where appropriate, our pharmacist will discuss antimalarial tablets together with bite-avoidance measures such as repellent, covering up in the evening and using a net. We tailor this to your exact route and season.

When to book

Book a few weeks ahead where you can. The yellow fever certificate is only valid from ten days after vaccination, and some other vaccines need more than one dose. Same-week appointments are usually available at our Standish clinic, with no GP referral needed.
