Most travellers to Thailand and South East Asia are advised to be up to date with hepatitis A, typhoid and the combined tetanus, diphtheria and polio booster. These cover the food, water and everyday risks that are common across the region. Because travel vaccines are prescription-only medicines, our pharmacist confirms which ones are right for you during your consultation rather than selling a fixed package.

Vaccines considered for longer, rural or adventurous trips

If you are staying for several weeks, travelling into rural areas, working with animals or planning activities such as trekking, caving or motorbiking, our pharmacist may also discuss hepatitis B, rabies and Japanese encephalitis. These are not needed by everyone, and we only recommend what genuinely fits your itinerary. For rabies, pre-exposure vaccination makes treatment after a bite simpler and reduces the number of injections you would need, but it does not remove the need to wash the wound and seek medical care straight away if you are bitten or scratched.

Malaria and antimalarial tablets

Malaria risk in South East Asia varies a lot by area and season, and many popular tourist spots are low risk while some rural and border regions are higher. Where tablets are appropriate, our pharmacist will talk through antimalarial tablets alongside bite-avoidance measures such as repellent, covering up and using a net. We will not prescribe tablets you do not need.

When to book

It is best to book a few weeks ahead, as some vaccines work best given in good time and a few need more than one dose. If your trip is sooner than that, it is still worth booking, because there is often useful protection we can start and advice we can give. Same-week appointments are usually available at our Standish clinic, with no GP referral needed.
